Netizens admit to being overly harsh with female stars

Article: It's miserable to be an actresss... 'criticisms' whether you take care of yourself or not

Source: Yonhap News via Nate

Editorial that talks about how actresses are more harshly scrutinized and criticized online for the way they don't necessarily choose to present themselves. It goes into Moon Geun Young's recent controversy where viewers felt that she looked bloated or 'had a big head' in her drama, as well as other cases where stars were criticized for not looking pretty enough and then criticized again once they decide to go under the knife because of that.

1. [+251, -9] This is a huge problem for people in our country. People just really enjoy hating on other people, whether they're male or female. Think about it, I'm hating on our country's people right now and someone reading this comment is bound to hate on me for that... We need to improve.

2. [+208, -24] Moon Geun Young's really skinny, I really don't know why people are telling her to lose weight

3. [+191, -36] Moon Geun Young's pretty, skinny, and acts well. It's just that she looks a bit too young for her character.

-

"The journalist didn't really catch the gist of what netizens have been saying regarding Moon Geun Young. It's not that she's ugly, the point of their argument is that she was miscast for the role. Her youthful face does not fit the image of a Chungdamdong daughter in law."

"I think it's just the majority of Koreans being that way... They can't stand seeing others do better than them. We even have the traditional saying, 'Jealousy brews when a cousin buys land.'"

"Our country really is picky and unnecessarily harsh about these things. I've heard foreigners say that Korean actresses have great skin, tall height, and are all beautiful, but we're the ones that always try to catch a flaw no matter how beautiful they are. And then when they resort to plastic surgery, we bi*ch about that too... I usually find that women are more prone to criticizing the physical appearance of actresses. I've read one too many comments where they say her ears are weird or what her proper chin length should be. And men are no exception... They're quick to criticize older actresses by calling them old news and to get off their screens. This is why idols are so prevalent."

"I honestly think celebrities only get plastic surgery out of stress from internet criticism."

"Unless you're skinny to the point of death, people will always call you fat. What's important is the acting."

"Bi*ch about getting plastic surgery, bi*ch about being ugly if they didn't get plastic surgery... No solution to this."

    Pretty much.

Whatever an idol does, there will always be people criticizing it no matter what they do and it's quite sad. They're damned if they do, they're damned if they don't.

interesting. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with providing constructive criticism to one's work or if a celeb makes a mistake or gets in trouble, to criticize them and say they need to pay the appropriate consequences. Totally understandable. But it is sad what lengths some will go to in the terms of hurtful words, even if most are just keyboard warriors.

  3. Honestly, sometimes I feel like it sucks to be a female period when it comes to criticism.

  4. The whole world does it. And poor Moon Geun Young. She actually looks like she lost weight she didn't need to lose in the latest episodes of her drama.

  5. Comment 1.. That. Today I'm seeing Knetizens in different light.

  6. But isn't MGY a good actress? Cos even if you look too young for a role, you can still be believable by acting well.

  7. Females are damned if they do, damned if they don't. It's just the unfortunate reality of those living in a patriarchal/ultra conservative/traditional society.

  8. Hypocrites? Practice what you preach netizens -.-'

I have to disagree. IMO, women tend to get hated more and sometimes for the most ridiculous reasons. During scandals, it is the actresses, female idols and entertainers who will be critisized and condemmed to no end. Case in point: IU, Hyori, Ivy, Baek Ji Young. Hmm, why aren't the males subjected to the same standards? Why are their oppars being shielded and the females viciously attacked?

  10. the internet community is strong there. and the double standards. "They can't stand seeing others do better than them" that what i feel too reading some netizen comments.

  11. Moon Geun Young just has a round babyface... she is actually really skinny. Another female celeb that suffers from similar criticism is jennifer lawrence. They just have round faces which makes them look "heavier", but they're not. I wish people would just stop criticizing women's appearances so much. You never see them do that to actors.. actors are allowed to be as fat, ugly, etc as they want

  12. So Koreans aren'tdisillusioned , they know that they are hypocritical and hateful and foolish. Good to know.

  13. "period" <----- another reason why sometimes it sucks to be a female xD

  14. Sexism. And it's not only in Korea, in USA too. Kristen Stewart, Angelina Jolie ect...

  15. Yup. We mature faster than the boys our own age, which makes dating a nightmare. Menstrual cycles and growing breasts are both usually accompanied with pain and/or embarrassment. Our hips get wider as we get older. Losing your virginity is ALWAYS painful, no matter what you do... When we bear children, our bodies never go back to how it used to be. (My cousin who had a baby two years ago told me that she can't "hold it in" as long as she used to because pregnancy sorta messed with her bladder.)

Meanwhile, boys get deeper voices and the only real problems they have are having random boners in class.

    Sigh.

But in exchange, women have prettier clothes, nicer hairstyles, jewelry, etc. When we get engaged and married, our rings are always nicer and flashier than the man's ring. :)

  16. MGY is a good actress, she just doesn't really match with her partner Park Si Hoo. I don't think they are a great couple, just cute sometimes. No matter how great you are, if you don't match with your partner, your couple still suck.

  17. the sad part is that most people that hate on female celebrities are females themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah 100% true. They should not criticize hatefully if they are tryin to be critics.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Agreed. There's a difference between:

"She can't dance/sing/act that well, maybe with a little bit more practice?"
    compared to:
    "OMG SHE'S A FUCKING SLUT/WHORE/CUNT/etc."

  20. this reply is so cute ^^

  21. Another is having baby.............I can't even think of how painful that is to pass a human through your body....>:(

  23. Society is so mean sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's ongoing not only in netizens but all over the world ~ everyone hates on you no matter how nice you really are

    ReplyDelete
  25. For me, being a man is better.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Are the fat dumbasses in USA aware of their senselessness too? do they know that they are disgustingly hypocritical and foolish?

    "Kristen Stewart, Angelina Jolie ect..."

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's not that Koreans necessarily hate more than other countries. It's that there is a weird power placed upon Korean netizens. Like what they say online REALLY does matter to the Korean entertainment cycle and that in turn empowers them to leave more hateful replies in huge numbers to the point of creating death petitions for celebrities. In my country, it's not like that at all. I mean sure, people leave hateful replies on twitter/youtube/other networking sites but we know the chance of someone like Bieber reading those comments are very slim.

    ReplyDelete
  28. But yeah Koreans are really obsessed with their very narrow ideal of Beauty.

  32. sorry but i feel no sympathy or understanding towards you all, its kind of like the blind man calling another man blind. how long before the majority of these people continue to bash other human beings purely on the basis of them being more successful? i have seen comments like these far too often.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well ok. But aren't they just going to continue their bashing after anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Dur, why would they not and why would you let men have that as a special priviledge. You shitty-ass females make no goddamn sense, all people including women criticize each other for a reason. It's just a matter of what we want to achieve while doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Being a female does suck...especially when you have females who feel the need to bring other women down by saying that they can't criticize each other because of this fake "we are in this together" mentality. No bitches, we are not in this together because clearly some of our aims are different.

There is nothing left now than to ask for legislations that introduce rights for a third gender, a gender that is neither male or female and strip away with this flawed sex-based societal conditioning that has stripped away equality from all people.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh god, the "baby messed up my body" complaint. There's a really easy solution to this folks, don't get pregnant! That's the price you pay as a female to have children. Otherwise, shut the fuck up about "your problems" and how you can't "be the person that you used to". Maybe if you did good research on this, then you would have been able to make better informed decisions.

  42. They bitch about how ugly these women are both actresses and female idols and then bitch again for them getting plastic surgery. Why do you even give a fuck if someone get's plastic surgery? it's their face, their body. Get a fucking life already.
